ALP Utilities Announces 2026 Electric and Water Rate Adjustments

The Alexandria Board of Public Utilities at its November 17 meeting approved a 3% electric increase and a 15% water increase for 2026. These changes will help cover the rising cost of purchase power, equipment and long-term infrastructure projects needed to keep our system reliable.

“These rate changes help ensure we can continue providing the safe, reliable service our community depends on, while also investing in the major infrastructure improvements needed for Alexandria’s future,” said Ted Cash, ALP Utilities General Manager.

Residential Electric Customers

An average ALP residential customer using 750 kWh will see an increase of $2.14/month on their bill.

Energy Charges

  • October to June: $0.0890 / kWh
  • July to September: $0.1110 / kWh

Large Commercial Electric Customers

  • Facilities Charge: from $65 to $70
  • Energy Charge: $0.0400 / kWh (unchanged from the previous year)
  • Demand (October to June): $16.35 to $17.35
  • Demand (July to September): $22.20 to $23.35

“We know any increase has an impact on our customers,” Cash said. “That’s why we work hard to manage costs responsibly and keep our electric rates among the lowest in the country, even as we plan for long-term system reliability.”

Water Rate Change

The water rate change affects monthly facilities and usage charges for both residential and commercial customers

A typical residential water customer will see an average increase of $5.53 / month based on a typical ¾” residential meter and 4,000 gallons of monthly usage.

Why Rates are Changing

This adjustment supports critical projects such as:

  • A new Water Tower: which will increase storage capacity, improve water pressure and ensure we can meet the needs of our growing community.
  • A new Electric Substation: which will strengthen the reliability of our system, helping reduce outages and support future demand.
  • Electric Line Undergrounding: by continuing to move overhead lines underground we reduce outage risks from storms and improve system reliably.
  • Two New Wells: will expand our water supply capacity, support future demand and improve overall system reliability to ensure clean, safe water for years to come.

Focused on Reliable and Quality Service

As a community-owned and operated not-for-profit utility, ALP regularly reviews its rates with its local governing board to reflect the costs of providing reliable and quality service to its customers. ALP will continue to embrace new technologies and put best practices in place to improve the communities it serves through excellence.
