ELM STREET WATER TOWER GETS TORN DOWN. The 1936 Elm Street Water Tower was taken down on April 7, 2008. Demolition of the water tower was part of the water system's strategic planning program. The cost of maintaining the water tower exceeded the benefits of keeping it in operation. See more pictures.

Change in Electric and Water Rates—effective January, 2008 billings

Electric Rates:  A rate increase of approximately 10% has been implemented in electric rates. The increase is necessary because of the higher wholesale prices that ALP pays for power.  One factor influencing the cost of power is the continuing drought in the Missouri River basin where river water is used to generate hydroelectric power. A shortage of river water means reduced generation of electricity at the dams so more energy must be provided from a more expensive source.  The price of that power will increase by 23% in January, 2008. ALP receives about 35% of its power from Western Area Power Administration by hydro generation on the Missouri River.

Also, ALP’s supplemental power supplier, Missouri River Energy Services (MRES), will increase its rates to ALP by 6.5% in January.  The reason for this increase is to recover costs associated with restoring a huge transmission system that went down in an ice storm in Nebraska last winter.  ALP receives about 65% of its power from MRES by coal fired generation in Wyoming.

Water Rates:  Water charges for 2008 will increase by about 8% due to increased operating costs. An average monthly residential water bill will increase from $16.46 in 2007 to $17.74 in 2008.
