Electricity is always seeking a path to ground. This path is called a conductor. The human body is a very good conductor of electricity. The following are a few tips avoid becoming that path to ground.
- Always be aware of any overhead power lines.
- Stay at least 15 feet away from downed power lines. Call ALP if you see a downed line.
- If a power line falls on your vehicle after an accident, stay in your vehicle unless there is a fire. If a fire hazard is present, jump clear of the car, landing with both feet together. Never touch the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
- Water and electricity are a deadly combination. Install G.F.I. breakers in your kitchen, bathrooms and outside receptacles. Keep electrical appliances away from water.
- Do not use frayed electrical cords.
- If you have small children, keep unused electrical outlets covered.
- Electricity is a major cause of building fires. Make sure your electrical circuits and outlets are not overloaded.
- Do not plant trees near power lines. Tall trees can cause power disruptions and downed lines. Tree roots can cause damage to underground wires.
- Do not fly kites near power lines. Call ALP if your kite gets caught in a power line.
- Do not climb trees near power lines.
